Jonathan Smith, M.B.A.

Sales Director & Growth Innovator

With over 15 years of experience in B2B sales, technology solutions, product management, and strategic team leadership, Jonathan Smith has established himself as a driving force within the energy software landscape. Since
joining TRC Consultants, LC in August 2012—initially as a Support Representative and progressing to a prominent Sales Director role—he has leveraged his expertise to shape and elevate the PHDwin brand

Jonathan has pioneered PHDwin Connect, a groundbreaking initiative that fosters deeper collaboration and integration across the oil and gas reserves ecosystem. He further expanded PHDwin’s industry impact by launching PHDwin Week, transforming it into a comprehensive week-long event dedicated to cutting-edge reserves content and industry best practices. Building on this momentum, Jonathan is now spearheading PHDwin Developer, a forward-looking platform initiative that positions PHDwin as the leading system of record for managing, analyzing, and growing oil and gas reserves data

Before his tenure at TRC, Jonathan honed his skill set in the medical and computer industries, achieving domestic and international sales success. His strategic approach, coupled with a strong technical background, enables him
to understand clients’ complex operational challenges and deliver tailored solutions that drive efficiency, transparency, and value.

A graduate of Texas A&M University with an MBA from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Jonathan combines academic rigor with hands-on industry experience. Whether teaching courses, mentoring teams, or collaborating with clients, he consistently emphasizes innovation, practical insights, and result-oriented strategies—ensuring that professionals can thrive in an evolving market.

What Makes Jonathan’s Training Approach Unique?

Jonathan’s training methodology is rooted in firsthand, comprehensive product knowledge and a deep understanding of the industry’s evolving landscape. Having started as an expert PHDwin Version 2 user, he thoroughly understands the intricate differences between V2 and V3 ensuring participants receive guidance that is both historically informed and forward-looking. His extensive SQL expertise and close collaboration with TRC’s custom reporting team empower him to help organizations streamline
workflows, optimize data management, and unlock the full potential of PHDwin’s advanced capabilities.

In addition to his technical mastery, Jonathan is adept at guiding organizations through platform transitions. He specializes in converting legacy PowerTools users to PHDwin, ensuring that teams can quickly adopt the new environment with minimal disruption. By offering tailored strategies and hands-on support, he helps companies achieve faster, more confident adoption of the latest tools and workflows.

Jonathan’s insights and experience have also proven invaluable for banks and large international consulting firms seeking to enhance their corporate process and implement organization-wide improvements. He brings
a strategic perspective to complex operational challenges, ensuring that financial institutions and top consultancies can leverage PHDwin to drive efficiency, compliance, and long-term growth.

Above all, Jonathan’s commitment extends well beyond the training room. With a robust professional network and a history of supporting past participants, he remains a reliable resource—always ready to troubleshoot challenges, suggest new approaches, and help professionals continuously evolve in a rapidly changing industry.

By emphasizing best practices and thoughtful customizations, he empowers teams to get the most value out of PHDwin—ensuring that each department’s needs are met, communication gaps are minimized, and decision-making becomes more
data-driven and transparent

Beyond structured training, Josh is a versatile resource. He is known to step in on support calls, sharing his practical insights and troubleshooting expertise with clients. Whether guiding a multinational operator through PSC design or offering a medium-sized company best practices for data integration, he consistently tailors his approach to each unique client scenario.

and/or the intricate process of Production Sharing Contract (PSC) and Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) design.
